Life Comes At You FAST. Fancy Faye Has A Cast

Updated: Sep 2

June 3rd: Fancy Faye graduates from kindergarten. Caps, tassels, big smiles all around. Everyone was incredibly joyful.

June 4th: The first day of summer vacation… and Faye breaks her arm. What a wow.

I’ve been a mom for a long time, but I had never dealt with an injury like this. Around 8 a.m., there was a loud crash from the my office. Seconds later, Faye came running in screaming and crying, clutching her arm and saying it hurt. I figured she had just tripped, so I iced it and told her to sit down. Because I still had a busy work day ahead. SHE was on summer break, not me.

By mid-morning, I knew something wasn’t right. The arm was swollen, warm to the touch, and Faye was still in tears and becoming lethargic. By the afternoon, we were at the ER, where an X-ray confirmed it — she had a fractured elbow.

I felt awful for her and, honestly, for our summer. Gymnastics? Canceled. Dance? Out. Half our activities? Gone. The first few weeks were tough: pain, restless nights, and figuring out life with one arm. The hardest part of parenting in seeing your children in pain and not being able to do anything about it. But in true Faye fashion, she didn’t just adapt, she owned her injury.

She rocked her sling like a purse. She decorated and had friends sign her cast. She learned how to carry snacks, turn pages in a book, style her outfits, and attack big brother Nick with one hand (and her legs). Within weeks, she was running around like nothing was wrong, and I had to keep reminding her, “Yes, you do have a broken elbow.”

Now, as we look back on this summer, I can say she handled it better than I did. She may have traded back bends and cartwheels for cast, and she missed her first dance recital (I'm still in my feelings about that) but she did it with style, resilience, and more sparkle than ever. Life comes at you fast. But Fancy Faye? She bounces back faster. As for motherHOOD? Sometimes it's really ghetto here. You have to stay prayed up and ready; things can change at a moments notice. 24+ year in the game and a new mom level unlocked!
